Kaðvalðr (also written as ᚲᚨᚦᚢᚨᛚᚦᚱ in Norse) is a town in the central northwest of Moxiecraft. It began as a northern colony of the Duchy of Cadwaladr, with the duke still having a representative ruling power over the settlement despite it being granted independence in 2025. Although originally founded by Cadwalons, its culture morphed with Norse traditions and lifestyles present in the area and led to its population mostly speaking Norse and following Norse-paganism. The town's name is the Norse writing for Cadwaladr.

History

Kaðvalðr was founded as a colony of the Duchy of Cadwaladr by a legendary player later mentioned in the Kaðvalðon-Sagas as “Arðvíss” (which would have been Arthwys in Welsh). Originally the colony was meant as a way to get rid of “unpleasant” inhabitants, as they were called in old Cadwaladr, without losing them as citizens, which is why the town sits in a harsh and icy territory.

Since its creation, Kaðvalðr had been relatively autonomous from the duchy despite relying on food deliveries from the mainland. The time in which the Cadwalons in Kaðvalðr came into contact with the surrounding Norse is unknown, but the Kaðvalðr-Sagas, which are traditional writings made by the people of Kaðvalðr, describe the Norsemen as having come with axes and shields but not destroying the settlement. In fact, the Norse from the surrounding area settled in Kaðvalðr and interbred with the Cadwalons, which historians say led to the conversion from Celtic paganism to Norse paganism and the adaptation of Norse language, writing, and culture.

The duchy still sent out royal guards to Kaðvalðr every six months to keep up with the settlement's development but never intervened in the politics or social life in the colony, likely fearing an attack by the Norsemen.

Little is known about the development of Kaðvalðr after the royal guards over time could not understand the Kaðvalðons anymore and stopped visiting altogether after the duke deemed it as “useless.” It is said in the sagas that citizens participated in raids together with the Vikings, which seems to be proven by recent archeological finds connecting them to raids in many areas.

In October of 2025, the current duke of Cadwaladr, HermesOfSuburbia, officially granted the town independence despite it unofficially being the case for a long time. As a sign of mutual respect, the citizens of Kaðvalðr decided to keep the royal ensign of the duchy in the flag and the duke as the official leader of the town, though more as a representative figure.
